Album Review: Yelawolf - Love Story

Star

"Alternating between rap and white-bread pop-country might pay the bills, but it must make it pretty tough to look yourself in the mirror"

More Yelawolf Yelawolf

Love Story is a confused, dispiriting affair.

Yelawolf’s Zac de la Rocha as helium-fuelled country boy delivery leaves him sounding a little dated. That he uses his instrument to bite Ice Cube’s nearly three-decade-old flow on Outer Space makes him sound prehistoric. Yela’s chief experimentation here is wandering into country territory. American You is a would-be singalong ballad, clumsy and artless, its ending with “ooooh-ooh fuck you too” as if it’s ironic to swear. Alternating between rap and white-bread pop-country might pay the bills, but it must make it pretty tough to look yourself in the mirror.
