We Will Rock You

"Act 1 is a bit of fun, but Act 2 stinks as much as the post-pyro sulfur smell."

Otherwise known as, "We Will Wock You" (as introduced over the venue PA by Bwian Mannix in his role as Buddy), text crawls up the back screen - akin to the Star Wars opening credit - to fill us in on this musical scene: the year 2350 when live music is banned on earth.

The unison of the dancers during the intricate choreography in the opening 'Internet Gaga' scene is exceptional. This show's strongest performances are put in by Simon Russell (Khashoggi) and Oz (Jaz Flowers), but sadly there's zero chemistry between our lead couple: Erin Clare (Scaramouche)'s attempt at a British accent is deplorable; Gareth Keegan (Galileo) struggles with some power notes and is not a natural mover. As for Mannix's dancing? He constantly pulls focus for all the wrong reasons and it's a relief when he's banished up a ladder to concentrate solely on the arm positions.

Casey Donovan as Killer Queen evokes a cartoon Disney villain such as Cruella de Vil. Sure, her character's meant to be OTT, but not this cringe-worthy. We Will Rock You certainly highlights the great Freddie Mercury (and even Adam Lambert); when Mercury's voice is featured during a couple of snippets, we really just wanna hear the original Queen songs.
