Album Review: We Lost The Sea - Departure Songs

"Music for long journeys to destinations unknown."

Departure Songs opens with the most rousing musical eulogy you'll ever here. Despite its wordlessness, the seven-minute instrumental A Gallant Gentleman is a heart-wrenching number, impossible to read as anything but a tribute — and a celebration — in honour of the band's late frontman Chris Torpy, who passed away in early 2013.

The record's remaining four tracks are considerably low-key — Bogatyri is a bluesy meditation that feels like watching landscapes pass by through a misty train window while The Last Dive Of David Shaw swells and fades like with tidal force. This is music for long journeys to destinations unknown, but it's well worth the trip.
