The new video for The xx's ‘Chained’ takes advantage of underwater cinematography, transporting the viewer to a world full of splendour and magic.
THE XX are known for their sultry, underwater vibes. Their new video for ‘Chained’ takes this description to a literal level with the use of underwater cinematography, transporting the viewer to a contradictory world full of splendour and magic.
Coexist, THE XX’S new album attracted a whole lot of attention with its initial release, and for good reason. It’s a wonderland of imagery and sounds that caress you like your being serenaded, not lying in front of your CD player (or record player, for those infinitely cooler than me) and staring at the ceiling wishing you were inside THE XX’S imagination.
The cinematography is really pretty, and it suits the song to a tee. Soft lighting, slow-motion underwater bubbles… somehow these things that have been done a thousand times before seem new and fresh and lovely captured within the charm and intrigue of ‘Chained.’

The build-up in the actual track coincides perfectly with this amazing rainbow reflection that starts seeping into the water as the protagonist attempts to save this girl. It’s kind of what the whole video builds up to, and it’s a detail that just makes the whole clip. Have a perusal yourself.
