'Savage' is more than just your typical rap braggadocio, it is a statement of intent: Jesswar is coming for you.
Originally hailing from Fiji, JESSWAR is one of Brisbane's most promising up-and-comers,and her latest track, 'Savage', is a slick, brazen battle cry. 'Savage' comes off the back of a stellar year for Jesswar, with the talented young rapper playing gigs with everybody from Tkay Maidza to Lady Leshurr and inking a distribution deal with the the Hilltops Hoods' record label, Golden Era Records.
'Savage' is more than just your typical rap braggadocio, it is a statement of intent: Jesswar is coming for you, and she doesn't give a fuck what you think of her. "You can hate it but I won't buy it, I know who I am making moves real quiet," she declares, her infectious flow and tongue-in-cheek delivery dominating the understated beats of the track. The video for 'Savage' is a celebration of diverse female excellence, taking the typical tropes and flipping them in a bold statement about the changing face of Aussie hip hop.
"Being Fijian my people were portrayed as 'savages' so using that term was definitely thought out in reclaiming that terminology and more like a war call," explains Jesswar. "I feel confident that I've been working hard a for a long time so I wanted to come out with the ferocious nature that has helped me get to this point. Using the word cunt is important too, this is another word I'm reclaiming and embracing. This industry is brutal as a woman so being resilient and tougher than the next dude is necessary to succeed."
