Having recently released their second EP, Make Me Stay A While So I Can Catch My Breath, Hemm have solidified themselves as one of Australia's most forward thinking electronic music projects. Known for heavy lyrics, experimental production the duo channel this energy visually on their new music video for their track 'Why Do I Unwind?'
The track itself is an ode to the intimate connection of the pair. Its melodies wash over the listener creating a pushing and pulling dynamic. Its fast paced drums, eerie synth lines and whispery layered vocals all build to a whimsical haven. There's comfort in the uneasiness of the track, with moments of closeness and distance created through its expansive structure. The accompanying music video, directed by Arabella Frahn-Starkie, reflects the track's glowing aura perfectly.
The video provokes the pair's knack for originality, open ideas of intimacy and how that relates to interpersonal connection. The video shines in colour and texture. Pastel colouring and randomly paced shots reflect the tracks moving rhythms. The duo's bodies are the main pieces of the film reflecting the pairs ingenuity and relationship.
Frahn-Starkie justifies the nature of the video, 'Hearing the melodies I could really feel this movement of pushing backwards and forwards. Coming into close proximity with a body and creating a vast distance. A rush forwards and a slow retreat. I felt that the idea of receding into a world of colour and texture related to a particular aspect of what I connected to lyrically.'
Hemm's 'Why Do I Unwind?' visually and sonically strengthens this new chapter of their career. The duo's provoking creative direction has now led them to be one of the most intriguing musical projects in Australia.
