Live Review: Annie Bass shares deeply intimate themes in her new clip for 'Sweet Nothing'

Melbourne based singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Annie Bass is a female force to be reckoned with. Coming off the back of her debut EP 'Control', Bass just released the hauntingly beautiful visual accompaniment to her single 'Sweet Nothing', which seeks to explore the intimate dimensions of social media and the dating world.

Coming off the back of her debut EP Control, Bass has just released the hauntingly beautiful visual accompaniment to her single 'Sweet Nothing', which seeks to explore the relevant intimate dimensions of social media and the dating world.

Like many creatives, Bass uses her own relationships and personal experiences to drive the inspiration behind her work, which is equally inspiring and admirable in her debut EP. Like Control, 'Sweet Nothing' is an intimate and vulnerable expedition through Bass' life, traversing through the conflicting emotions that expose dating in a social media-obsessed world. It highlights themes of assault, mental illness and self-destructive behaviour, which encapsulates the concept behind Bass' EP that was born in a dark place, but manages to rebuild issues that hit so close to home.

Directed by Meg Duncan and filmed by Nathan Guy, the 'Sweet Nothing' clip presents a well-curated and fixated version of individuals, working to highlight the conflicts and contrasts in relationships. The difference between the real and fictionised versions of ourselves showcases how insecurities can impact the fate of relationships, yet brings to the surface their ability to turn heartache into wisdom and self-determination.

"The 'Sweet Nothing' music video works to articulate contrast and conflict. On one hand, there's sweetness, softness and femininity - but on the other hand, there's nothing; a facade, fogginess, an illusion. In contrasting power and vulnerability, we wanted this video to bring strength to softness by drawing out all the complex tones of light and dark in Annie Bass' beautiful song" says director Meg Duncan.
