More The Ocean Party More The Ocean Party

Punters braved the winter cold for some free live music on a Tuesday night and were additionally compensated with free pizza - courtesy of the guys at Wollongong's independent record store, Music Farmers - and select song choices from guest DJs Shining Bird, who were spinning tunes before and after the main show.

The enclosed intimacy of the record store allowed indie pop band The Ocean Party to jump up on stage and enjoy without taking themselves too seriously. A few technical microphone difficulties early on in the set were all casually laughed off by both the band and punters alike. Still early on in their tour, celebrating the release of their latest album, Beauty Point, a few hiccups like these could be forgiven, and ultimately didn't detract from the gig itself.

Their kind and easy-going-nature was reflected in their music as well. Lush, '80s style guitar tones rang prominently over well-articulated drum beats. The vocal lead role was shared among the five band members, which helped to keep things fresh as the dreamy guitar riffs rolled on.

"Everyone's got a hometown" the now Melbourne-based band crooned in Memorial Flame Trees, touching upon their Wagga Wagga upbringing. They also briefly mentioned it was that same regional city where older versions of songs got their first performances. Guess Work was one of their many feel good tunes that broke down into an emphatic chorus and helped showcase the talented songwriting the group are capable of.

After being bunched up together for a decent stint, taking sips from long necks out of brown paper bags in between songs, The Ocean Party wrapped up their set as positively as they started. It proved to be a great gig to eat pizza too and was made more flavoursome by the clear enjoyment these guys get out of performing together.
