Album Review: The Go! Team -- The Scene Between

StarStarStar

"This is another step on The Go! Team’s engaging, endearing, occasionally baffling journey."

More The Go! Team The Go! Team Profile

This is another step on The Go! Team’s engaging, endearing, occasionally baffling journey.

Ian Parton’s collective came to prominence in the mid-naughties with a crunchy, breakbeat, cheerleader-chant sound. The Scene Between is a step away from funk towards pop. What D’You Say? even has a sweet “oo-woo-oo” to prove the point. Her Last Wave could have been co-written by Stephen Malkmus! Gaffa Tape Bikini is a 43-second echo of the buzzy past. With this album, the competence and immediacy remains but in jettisoning the hip hop backbone, it fails to reach previous stellar heights.
