Album Review: Summer - Flake Time Rolls By

"The maudlin song titles belie the strength of songwriting on show."

Steph Crase aka Summer Flake stretches out on this EP, a precursor to her impending second album, and the maudlin song titles belie the strength of songwriting on show.

Blur Me Out takes a more nuanced, melancholic route, with vocals sounding more bruised as Crase wishes to be blurred out "to the back of the painting", even as the refrain gallops along into more uplifting aural terrain, and is haunting as a result. Other songs include Makes Me Wanna Cry, a Neko Case-meets-Stevie Nicks country shuffle, and The Sun Won't Shine, an explosive slacker caterwaul.
