Album Review: Steve Roden & Stephen Vitiello - The Spaces Contained In Each

4 December 2014 | 12:06 pm | Guido Farnell

"Subtly deep listening within a highly conceptual sound space."

This disc finds respected American sound artists Roden and Vitiello documenting an installation they created as part of a residency on Governor’s Island in New York, one immersive 50-minute track that evolves from ambient field recordings into slowly evolving tones and drones.

The one-time punk rockers have seemingly moved beyond traditional precepts of composition to work with sound, sculpturing it into strange mind-melting abstract shapes. Operating at the subliminal level this meditative album is based on the artists’ recordings of silence, subtly deep listening within a highly conceptual sound space.
