To help us celebrate International Women's Day, Melbourne musician KingIV takes us through her favourite female driven tracks.

Shining the light on the sweet sounds of female musicians is a huge focus for us here at Purple Sneakers, 365 days a year. But to celebrate International Women's Day, we're amping it up with a spotlight brighter than ever before.

Melbourne's KINGIV has been crafting some mystifying music lately. Her beautifully airy vocals wind their way around her textured production style. 'Like I'm Back' is her brand new single, and its a dynamic listen. So what's even better than an incredibly talented female musician? One that champions other incredibly talented female musicians! KingIV took us through her favourite female driven tracks.

M.I.A - LOVALOT

This song is one of my all-time faves. It came out when I was 13 and I am still not sick of it. It has all of the things I love about M.I.A in it - sporadic production, percussive and effortless vocals - and her direction with each track is always so clear and uncompromising, I love the repetition of the lyrics “I really love a lot, but I fight the ones that fight me”.

SON OF A KICK ft. LADY LESHURR & PAIGEY CAKEY - HOURS

I am so baffled by Lady Leshurr’s skill and every time I listen to this song I find something new to be impressed by. I saw her live at Brunswick’s Howler a couple of weeks ago and it was so amazing to see the stamina and drive she portrays in her music translated into such an energetic performance.

DAI BURGER - CLASS PRESIDENT

This is another artist I saw live recently and I have listened to this track almost everyday since. She is equal parts passionate and fiery and I can see exactly why Melbourne loves her so much.

HABITS - MSG (Me_irl Remix)

Habits have been a big inspiration of mine since moving to Melbourne, their live-set is truly immersive and empowering, they have such a distinct vision and I really admire it. I think this remix is so clever but checking out the original is a must!

ELLIPHANT feat. BIG FREEIDA - CLUB NOW SKUNK

This song is so fun, and the combination of Elliphant and Big Freeida is so energising and intense. Elliphant is without a doubt a favourite artist of mine, everything is a party with her and it’s impossible to ignore the force that she is.

KALI UCHIS - RIDIN ROUND

And to end on something a little more chill...Kali Uchis is a Colombian R&B queen and if I had to listen to one artist for the rest of my life it would probably be her. Her music is so easy to listen to but her attitude is so direct and cut-throat. She also self-produced a mix-tape when she was 18-years-old called ‘Drunken Babble’ and it is so genius.
