"Despite some impressively sultry vocals, the band’s funkiness feels so controlled and sanitised that it detracts from their genuineness."
Attempting an ultra-slick funk sound, this offering instead feels incredibly dated: a style of smooth, soulful pop best left to '90s boy bands. Once you get past the irritating opening, Mercury's classic R&B melody is the EP's strongest. However the release is altogether too wholesome, conveying an incredibly squeaky clean, abstinence-touting vibe. Midsummer Blues is so cheerfully bubbly it grates and, by watered-down closer Dob, it seems as if the boys have run out of ideas. Despite some impressively sultry vocals, the band's funkiness feels so controlled and sanitised that it detracts from their genuineness.
