A rainy Saturday night saw Brisbane's iconic The Zoo become the arena for a 5 band bill that was non-stop throwdowns and breakdowns. Congrats to She Cries Wolf on launching their latest collection of singles 'I'.

More She Cries Wolf More She Cries Wolf

Salt Money were an intense and excellent way to begin the night. The tone was well and truly set by the tremendously passionate set. They thrashed through their set, the highlight being 'internal/external' - the band all screaming the line 'Everything is new now, this is your first breath' - and truthfully, they are 100% breathing new life in to the hardcore scene around Brissy. Genuine, heartfelt and leaving nothing on the table, the band are nothing BUT all heart. Drummer Mick finished the set absolutely wailing on the drums and leaning right the fuck in to his kit, finishing it out with the already solid crowd wanting more.

Blind Girls took the stage and I was instantly taken by the band. Probably a little less focused and polished than High Tension when they were at their peak and doing their thing, but certainly heavier, more intense and way more ready to jump on the blast beats, Blind Girls have a bit of a future ahead of them in the heavy scene, in my opinion! My friend said straight after their final song "That's My shit right there!", evidently bookmarking Blind Girls as ones to watch. No Pun intended.

Trust were next up, and the three piece band were the only band that didn't REALLLLY connect with me for the night, but still brought some big PHAT vibes to the gig. The band features members of Dream on Dreamer, Young Lions and Violent Soho, and I don't know what happens when you put those three bands in a mixer and hit blend, but they went for something completely different than that. The band were heavily bass guitar driven. It was honestly like The Hives decided to ditch the suits and go S U P E R heavy in their style. It was probably the biggest departure in style for the evening, but it all definitely worked.

Headwreck took the stage and INSTANTLY took my interest - their stylings 100% more up my alley/in my wheelhouse than the rest of the bill tonight, but they ripped through tracks from their 2021 EP Glamorise Demise, and JUST as one of my friends said to me, "You know what band these guys' intro riffs remind me of? Linkin Park" - they began to cover Linkin Park's Lying From You, with Mike Shonoda's rap parts replaced as hardcore screams - and it brought the house down! My initial thought when the vocalist took the stage was that his stage outfit was a button up shirt, with another shirt over the top and with a beanie on his head. Having played that stage in The Zoo, my thoughts turned to "He has made a grave error here, that stage is INCREDIBLY HOT, even in winter." The beanie soon came off, and I am certain that he regretted that double shirt combo, FUCK THAT. Regardless, they demolished the stage tonight - an EXCELLENT decision for main support this evening and the audience are now WELL and truly warmed up.

She Cries Wolf take the stage and frankly, the audio, the lights, the tone, the production all raises about 5 notches - and the guys' years of experience and song writing and performance skills are on show here. They deftly and expertly show who's boss in the Brisbane hardcore scene. This is a band operating at peak levels and they thrash through a glut of songs REALLY fast, back to back and not looking back or allowing the crowd to slow down or catch their breath. At one stage, vocalist Luke Harriss asks for the time, and says "Fuck, we're early", then brushes that off and kicks off another song instantly. No time to worry about schedules, he's got some heavy shit to scream at you RIGHT NOW. The band wrapped up their set, and the crowd cheer, sated and sweaty. She Cries Wolf are back and frankly, it can't be long before they are heading south to NSW and VIC stages on East Coast tours.
