Bursting onto the scene in 2009, THE BIG PINK were an instant success with their debut A Brief History of Music, producing a free flowing album, full of deep and sometimes dark moments. Like most stellar debuts, the follow up was always going to be a tough task for the British duo and listening to Future This, you can’t help but think back to their debut.
The first two singles ‘Stay Gold’ and ‘Hit the Ground (Superman)’ share a pleasant familiarity, showcasing their winning formula: a unique soft electronic atmosphere coupled with a memorable chorus. The remainder of the album is relatively risk free, although ‘1313’ strays away from the norm through wicked synths underneath those unmistakable vocals. ‘Rubbernecking’ is surprisingly poppy while closing track ‘77’ is a grower, featuring some darker lyrics more associated with the debut. Overall, Future This holds a more upbeat tone over the debut, however there are no real standouts like the catchy ‘Dominoes’ or the haunting ‘Velvet’ to carry the album.
