With a mixture of styles and sounds vibrating from their new She Will Never Know EP, Melbourne's Polo Club have produced something that had this reviewer bopping in his swivel chair. The four-piece (along with guest vocalist Tali Gal-On) beautifully mesh together interesting sounds and beats into a genre-amalgamation of pop, rap, hip hop and nu-wave.
The collaboration of vocalist Adam Fitzgerald's interesting sound and Dyl Thomas' rap swaps effortlessly throughout the EP. Opener, See You Again, lulls listeners into a false sense of security at a low frequency, before clapping its way right into Hot Chip-like vocals and brilliant percussion that encourages anyone to tap the table to the beat. This is the EP's highlight and the best example of the entertaining interchange of Fitzgerald and Thomas, both singing of lust and punch-spiking.
Thomas experiments with more sensual rap sounds in the title track contrasted with his male take on the brashness of Nicki Minaj in The View, complete with octave slides at the end of phrases. It's refreshing to hear a female addition on the final two tracks as guest vocalist Tali Gal-On takes the mic to sing backup and chorus lines with a warm tone.
The main appeal of this EP is its essence of fun, whether it is trumpets initiating The View, or See You Again's spaceship landing conclusion, which can only be explained by Dyl Thomas' self-confessed obsession with UFOs. It will get people alert and moving.
