Album Review: Paradise Lost - The Plague Within

With Nick Holmes now the frontman for old-school death metal fetishists Bloodbath, and guitarist Gregor Mackintosh getting murky with Vallenfyre it’s not surprising The Plague Within sees Paradise Lost embracing their death-doom roots.

Album #14 is a tour de force of melancholic brutality complete with Holmes sounding like he did on Shades Of God. Opener, No Hope In Sight sets the mournful tone while the likes of Sacrifice The Flame and Return To The Sun blend an ethereal drift with pummelling mid-tempo riffage. A fine effort from a group catching a much-needed third wind.
