South Africa’s Nozinja is credited with popularising with the ‘shangaan electro’ movement, a new style that channels African township folk traditions with electropop and house music.
If that description entices you, you’ll find something to groove to on the man’s debut record, be it the MIDI-rave groove of Baby Do U Feel Me or the playful funk of Vomaseve Hina. The problem with the album is that its stylistic approach is too broad to maintain conceptual coherency. Nozinja is no joke, that much is clear, but his sound needs refining if he wants to soar.
