Live Review: Mickey Avalon, Kid Mac, Fat Controller, Slippery

This night felt pretty superficial the whole way through but if surface-level rap meandering is what Mickey Avalon was aiming for, he’s pulled it off.

More Mickey Avalon Mickey Avalon

Slippery opened the show with a bucket hat on his head and some wannabe USA rapper attitude in his pocket. He is, however, distinctly Aussie with his biggest jammer, Land Down Under, full of sun, sand and girls in bikinis.

Trio Fat Controller continued along the theme of degrading women with uncreative lyrics, though they switched it up a bit with a hard rock base, live guitarist and shock value antics – the MC took all his clothes off for the last song about “sucking dick”.

Lead opener was the electro/R&B/rapper Kid Mac, whose best asset is his singing voice – a la Bruno Mars if he gets a few more lessons. The most dynamic act so far, he brought a heap of energy to the stage as well as a live drummer and bassist who mixed in some great reggae beats and dubstep drops that had the crowd pretty pumped.

The best part of Mickey Avalon's set was probably the intro music – a mash-up of Toni Basil's Hey Mickey, which was clever and tongue-in-cheek. The Hollywood, California rapper ran through a tirade of short, sharp songs punctuated by a scantily-clad “dancer” who spent a lot of her time bending over and taking her clothes off. Despite that, his show was pretty tame. His hit tracks are undeniably infectious, full of trap beats and some good samples and Fuckin Em All had the crowd yelling along. After the first half hour though, the song structure and performance technique became monotonous and Avalon's energy levels were fairly low.

Jane Fonda was a fun highlight and the dancer popped three bottles of champagne over the audience for the finale before they brought Kid Mac back out for an encore of My Dick, which was pretty hilarious.
