More than just a barrage of noise, Maids is a great example of heavy, rollicking pub-rock. Its grimy aesthetic and theatrical vocals give the impression that the band perform in some sort of costumed garb, which helps detract from the seriousness of their doomful prophesies. For instance, when combined with disjointed, futuristic chords, Mechanism's entertainingly alarmist lyrics – “Frozen in a test tube/Don't make a sound” – aren't too menacing.
