Album Review: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - This Unruly Mess I've Made

StarStarHalf Star

"Being brutality honest lyrically is always refreshing, but the beat missed the spot."

More Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' new record This Unruly Mess I've Made is raw and honest with Light Tunnels, a six-minute confessional of Macklemore's struggle with fame.

Opening with a beautiful piano instrumental to be promptly destroyed by a mix of hip hop and pop is the dreadful Downtown — its infectious tune might be the reason some see it as a hit. Growing Up goes back to basics, stripped back to a simple beat with a heartfelt message to his daughter, while Let's Eat takes the piss out of food and diets. Being brutality honest lyrically is always refreshing, but the beat missed the spot as the album teeters on the verge of pop.
