Mac DeMarco was God-like at The Hi-Fi.
World’s Raddest Mum/MC Agnes DeMarco strides onto The Hi-Fi stage to announce Scott & Charlene’s Wedding. “How ya garn?” asks Craig Dermody before launching into a solid set of punk rock.
MC Agnes next talks up “cool and original” bluesy-rock champs The Murlocs. Lead singer Ambrose Kenny-Smith duly dedicates Space Cadet to power mother/son couple ‘Macnes’. “Real bands take requests!” shouts a rude punter, to which Kenny-Smith replies, “Real bands don’t listen to dickheads.” Wailing into the mic like a wild dog on Bogan Grove, Kenny-Smith goes apeshit alongside headbanging lead guitarist Mladen Lalić Milinković. To finish up, Milinković sticks his guitar neck up Kenny-Smith’s crotch, sending the lead singer’s already twangy high-pitched vocal up a few notches higher.
Mac DeMarco wanders out in a cap with neck flap at the back and overalls to crazed screams from the sold out crowd. Lead guitarist Andy Boay casually skates out and around on rollerblades. Warming up with the mega-fun Salad Days, DeMarco provides an improvised instrumental as Boay takes off his skates to play more safely in his socks. After having a friendly chat about his star sign (Taurus) with Alana (Aries) in the front row, DeMarco busts out Cooking Up Something Good. Boay discloses the fact that DeMarco shat his pants on the balcony at 2pm earlier today, but DeMarco is happy to congratulate Boay on having far stronger turds. Ode To Viceroy gets punters chucking cigarettes on stage and DeMarco flashes a super-impressed, gap-toothed grin when a ciggie hits his guitar right on the neck. ‘Mamasita’ Agnes comes out to hug and kiss her boy for just a minute before the kids carry on with My Kind Of Woman. A round of crowdsurfing begins when one chick climbs up and takes selfies while lying high up on punters’ hands. Another surfer blissfully pours beer on his own head while lying horizontal in the air.
Clearly inspired, DeMarco launches himself into the crowd during dreamy track Still Together. Passed reverentially towards the soundbooth, DeMarco climbs up towards The Hi-Fi balcony section and shakes hands with awestruck punters. In a gutsy game of trust, DeMarco then crosses his arms over his chest and falls backwards into the hastily bunched-up crowd before being passed joyfully back towards the stage. DeMarco then closes out with a completely belting cover of Metallica’s Enter Sandman. Grown men are seen crying. People stagger out in shocked elation. Mac DeMarco appears to be God. Unforgettable.
