Luke McGregor: Almost Fixed It (MICF)

3 April 2017 | 6:01 pm | Sam Wall

“'Is it hard to enjoy when it looks like I'm gonna faint at any time?' Not at all."

Luke McGregor's had a sexual awaking recently. He had a crash course in nudity, bodily contact and intimacy last year for his ABC series Luke Warm Sex. Now he even has a proper girlfriend, which is new, although apparently, the two experiences have been apples and oranges.

What that all translates to is feeling more confident in himself; physically, emotionally, sexually. That does not mean that he's lost any of his gorky, geeky, gangly idiosyncrasies.

McGregor doesn't have nervous energy so much as nervous momentum. He squints, sidesteps, folds up like he's catching his breath, regularly throws out big, flipped V "power stances" - and he rarely misses a beat. You can't help but wonder, if science were able to harness the power of McGregor's limitless supply of fidgets, it might well solve the world's energy crisis (or at the very least, South Australia's).

Tics that might have derailed his routine are instead woven into its foundation, giving McGregor an off-kilter comedic timing that is completely his own, and surprisingly flexible. A highlight in Almost Fixed It is how he brings the crowd in with questions that seem to come from a genuinely curious place — questions about couples' ablutions, voyeuristic ghosts and body image — and his ability to roll with the responses is impressive.

He looks at all times to be sort of comfortable but also on the verge of a panic attack, and it makes him strangely relatable. It seems to be how most people feel these days, if not so visually. “Is it hard to enjoy this when it looks like I'm gonna faint at any time?” Not at all. We're right there with you buddy.

Luke McGregor presents Almost Fixed It, till 9 Apr at the Comedy Theatre, part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
