Escombe is groovy and self-aware of his natural ability. The musicality is great – anyone can dig it – yet Escombe seems to be having an attitudinal identity crisis. At this point in his career, he could benefit from deciding between the juvenile lyricism in Drink More Coffee and the darker undertones of Creeper Vine. Such is the difference between being perceived as tonally serious or as an artist that will continue to take the piss. With a talented band that plays refreshing, likeable roots rock, his ridiculous potential suggests ditching the banal.
