WORLDS END PRESS have certainly come a hell of a long way since the days of their bright and eccentric electro-pop releases. And the release of their new single, 'Deadbeat Sweetheart' is the perfect supporting evidence in our argument.
'Deadbeat Sweetheart' is the first taste from WEP's forthcoming debut album. Coming in at around 7 minutes, this is definitely not your typical dance-pop, early local set at Groovin' The Moo kind of track. This is a brooding take on a genre that is developing quicker than we can keep up with it, with swirling synth lines, dark bass undertones and a much deeper look at lyrical content.
The album was recorded with DFA Records co-founder, Tim Goldsworthy, aka guy who has dealt with and recorded for The Rapture, Cut Copy and more - and is definitely a leader in the evolution of that dance-punk sound we all love. So it's no wonder that these once smalltime Melbourne dance-punk wunder-kids are now taking a look down this distorted, elongated, dramatic Pop.
Much like the UK's Egyptian Hip Hop, who came into the scene hailed as the next big electro-pop act, we have a feeling that WEP will also release a much more haunting debut LP that will surprise most and may even lose them a couple of followers along the way. And with the way 'Deadbeat Sweetheart' hits on a darker level, we also have a feeling we'll be right.
It's neu-romantic, meets dance-punk, meets David Byrne, meets distortion-rock, meets some-other-stupid-made-up-collaborative-genre. But at the end of the day, it surpasses their previous works with ease and it makes us excited for some more details on the LP.
