Live Review: World Champion 'Shakes'

You'd think it would be so hard to follow up a track like WORLD CHAMPION's 'Avocado Galaxy'. It's been played worldwide, in quite a few headphones in Australia, and there's really no question as to why.

World Champion have got this incredibly infectious psych-dance sound following in the same vein as similar acts such as Jagwar Ma and possibly even Tame Impala (moreso 'Currents' era). But as you'd expect from Future Classic signees, they've made the genre completely their own.

They've got a new one out called 'Shakes', dropped under an hour ago at the time of writing. It's got a real driving beat that pushes this one forward and it's those blissed out psych vibes that really ring through in this one.

But I guess that's what World Champion are best known for right?

The balance they always manage to achieve between the vocals and the instrumentals makes it feel like a pop song, but there's so much more depth to it. It feels a little disco, but I think that's more in the beat than anything. But by the end of it, the guitars make this one feel like a true psych anthem.

What's most fascinating about World Champion's sound is how it manages to maintain an air of simplicity in such a complex sound. Their work is always so infectious, but that's the magic of it all.
