Live Review: LISTEN: Winter People 'Gallons'

Winter People have that beautiful melancholic dreamy sound that you can just listen to for hours. Check out their new EP 'Gallons'.

The raw sounds of the WINTER PEOPLE performing their song 'Gallons' live in a living room is a moodier, folkier take on the dark and rollicking recorded version.

The violin lends a haunting atmosphere to the folk-driven ballad, with the tinny guitar sounds revealing their roots influences. The strings in their music is what sets it apart.

The drama in the song builds throughout, until the tension is cut through when lead singer Dylan Baskind croons 'when the one that you dream of is gone.' Poignant.

It's Dylan's vocals that are especially distinctive and affecting – with a husky quality and a tone that is familiar, though I can't put my finger on who it is reminiscent of. It could just be one of those voices that is engaging and comforting.

It's worth hearing both versions – recorded and acoustic – of 'Gallons' as they offer a different perspective on the band's sound, highlighting different influences.

'Wishingbone' is the other song on the band's Unearthed page, and will be recognisable as it's received Triple J airplay. This song is more percussive than 'Gallons' and the harmonies are more uplifting. Both are catchy and reveal a promising indie band in the Sydney ensemble. As a Summer person, I can happily say I see now there is more to being a Winter person than layers and pasty skin, and I'm OK with it.

'Gallons' and 'Wishbone' are both available as free downloads from the band's Triple J Unearthed Page.

You can catch Winter People at Oxford Arts Factory on Thursday 7th June for the 'Gallons' EP Launch
