Wilough. Sounds familiar, right? That’s because Wilough is in fact the new moniker for Willow Smith, she off of tween-pop club banger ‘Whip My Hair’ fame.
Since then she’s changed her name, grown up a little and released what is actually a pretty decent track. (Not that we didn’t all love whipping our hair back and forth).
‘Rta’ is about as far from her previous songs as you can get, but despite being the daughter of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, there’s surprisingly little fuss online over her new music. After posting a great cover of King Krule’s ‘Easy Easy’ online earlier in the year, her Soundcloud shows a progression from precocious Hollywood starlet to a bona fide soulful electronic artist.
‘Rta’ (we haven’t figured out what it stands for yet either) is a chilled love song about soul mates and going wherever you want to go. Yes, she’s still only fourteen years old but this kind of doesn’t matter when D’artiste is on the production credits; her vocals nestle comfortably amongst hazy synths, sounding a little like a low key LIZ Y2K. Wilough’s track is demure and dreamy and when she asks us ‘if you really wanna go to London, I’ll sail us’ we wouldn't mind a ticket to tag along.
