WAFIA's new single, 'Bodies', is her most personal one yet. Co-written by Ben Abraham (Kesha, 'Praying') and produced by Robopop (Lana Del Rey, Charli XCX), it follows the release of '83 Days', Wafia's first solo release since her debut XXIX EP in 2015. It's also the first track off her forthcoming VIII EP.
As fans know, Wafia's mother is Syrian and her father is Iraqi. In 'Bodies', she channels the plight of her extended family in Syria. The song, written the night her family's visa applications were rejected, is an attempt on her behalf to draw similarities between people coming together, "from crossing country borders with other families, to marching and protesting a shared belief, or even just a night out with friends."
Fittingly, the lyrics are relatable on a number of levels. "All our friends are watching us," repeated throughout, could be a reference to the rest of the world as it looks in on what is happening with the Syrian Refugee Crisis, or a reference to a couple and their group of friends on a night out.
The song is invigorating and almost triumphal in its sound. A measured and relatable approach to writing a song about such a heavy topic, it definitely succeeds in conjuring that togetherness Wafia was aiming for.
