Melbourne-based RnB artist THANDO has done it again, with a smooth new single titled 'Numb'. Featuring some killer raps from REMI., the track transports the listener to a blurry night out and all the social expectations that go with it. Following up on her anticipated 2016 EP release Digital Love Letters, 'Numb' holds onto Thando's soulful roots while also incorporating a bold new vocal style and a late-night beat.
Thando's gorgeous voice and the catchy, groovy synths of 'Numb' belie the real-life topics that she touches on in the lyrics. "Standing all alone in a room full of wolves on the floor, I/ Take another one so I don't feel so alone," she sings. On one hand, there is a universal experience in feeling uncomfortable and out of place in a social situation (in this case, a dance floor), but Thando also specifically explores her place as a black woman in Australian society.
“I’m addressing being an ‘African Youth’ who has grown up in Australia," she explains. "Topics concerning ‘belonging’ and ‘race’ have been focused on by mainstream media, (especially as of late) and this had me reflecting on my place in this country and where I truly belong. The title references the struggle of realising how displaced I feel when I’m being my truest self, instead of a watered down version that’s easier to get along with… and in turn, numbing myself to how hard it actually is to do that.”
