Hailing from the Big Apple, TAKE A DAYTRIP (formally Daytrip), a duo comprising of Denzel Baptise and David Hugh Cosby, take their inspiration from various locations about the world, a fitting muse given the name of the band.
Receiving love from the likes of Wave Racer and What So Not, they have dropped the track 'Calling' like a refreshing call home to your mum from the road.
'Calling' in particular draws from Take A Daytrip’s time spent in LA. It’s hard to say if the demonic sounding vocals throughout the track are a tribute to the soulless stereotypes of LA. Given the weighty synth line throughout the track, the vocals may be more to do with the talented producers wanting to add a unique flourish to the clear LA G-Funk influence to make this piece of music their own.
'Calling' blends a lot of solid sounds. The intro to the track almost sounding like a 90’s pop ballad with the bouncy guitar lead drawing you in. There are a number of unusual sounds layered with this including bubbly keyboard chords to add to this feel. Further proving Take A Daytrip think left of centre they have incorporated the distinctive iPhone click throughout the track like an added layer of percussion. With the demonic vocals around the sound is a nice sense of familiarity.
Take A Daytrip have obviously made a lot of sacrifices to get themselves into the position they are and 'Calling' resonates these feelings. Band member Hugh Cosby explains:
"The track starts with the excitement and the feeling of purpose when you find your calling, but ends in the solace and recognition of what you're forced to leave behind."
All seriousness of the meaning aside this is a great listen for many moods. 'Calling' may at times even remind you of a scene out of the horror franchise Scream. It’s a fun little bedside listen for a stormy night.
