Plain and simple, POTÉ's 'Egosurf (For All Its Worth)' is one great song. Electronically manipulated vocals, busting percussion, and eccentric sample choices: the track exemplifies a world of talent and creativity.
Coming in under three minutes, what the song lacks in duration, it makes up for aptitude. 'Egosurf' is introduced with a spritz of percussion, welcoming the listener with an infectious rhythm and a genre-bending approach. The vocals are warped and smooth, and the melody is feverish with change and transformation.
St Lucian-born Poté raps in his English accent through the fuzz of a phone call, providing a clever shift in the pace of a song, and furthering the track into experimental territory. A sonically messy but enthrallingly elongated sound swirls its way through the track. Weaving through moments of quiet and moments of more intensity, the sound piques towards the conclusion, heightening the electronic elements in the song's otherwise soulful beat.
The pained exasperation with which Poté sings is undoubtedly reminiscent of Nick Murphy (formerly known as Chet Faker), meaning that Australian audiences are sure to jump aboard this artist's career. And rightfully so. The artist will release his Fire for Fire EP on the tenth of February, 'Egosurf (For All Its Worth)' will be one of four songs set to further propel the London musician.
