Live Review: LISTEN: Membrain 'Sit Back, Rewind'

MEMBRAIN is a Canadian duo consisting of solo artist GRIMES and experimental Montreal street musician TIM LAFONTAINE.

MEMBRAIN are a Canadian duo consisting of solo artist GRIMES and experimental Montreal street musician TIM LAFONTAINE. Together they have created an EP entitled Sit Back, Rewind, which is made up of atmospheric, minimal and danceable tunes.

Coming from the busy, fuzzy-distorted and extremely pop-centric work of GRIMES, MEMBRAIN is an unexpected, but pleasant surprise. GRIMES’ tiny child-like voice pops in and out of the music and is butchered, twisted and tailored to give the monotone electronica accompanying it mood and feeling. In a way Sit Back, Rewind is a collection of disco tracks - they are stripped back and don’t really have a beginning-middle-end structure. It’s almost as if each track could happily keep rolling along for eternity. ‘Airic’ and ‘Grime’ are two tracks from the EP that really stand out. Have a listen and see what you think.
