Sydney's Mel Blue are an act worthy of your attention, and you only need to listen to their latest single, 'Yesterday' to know why. Just under four minutes of left-field funk and dance combined with soft but commanding vocals, 'Yesterday' is the funk-filled bop you need in your life this week.
For fans of Kaytranada, Anderson .Paak or Mac Miller, mixed in with the insatiable funk of GoldLink or Thundercat, 'Yesterday' is a total earworm full of heavenly grooves that will get you two-stepping in no time.
Mel Blue said of the song, "Luke Gerber (bass player) and I wrote / produced “Yesterday” at my old boss’s country house in Sanctuary Point. We drove down south and brought a bunch of music gear to try write and produce an album. Yesterday was a little idea that had been sitting on my hard drive for about a year before I showed Luke down south. Didn’t think to much of it, until we re-worked it."
The band continued, "I remember singing and dancing around the kitchen trying coming up with all the parts. We were up till about 4am. Yesterday became our homage to likes of Daft Punk, Stardust, Phoenix, L’lmpératrice etc... We love French house / electronic music and wanted to create that feeling and nostalgia in this track. I dated a French Canadian girl, so I was surrounded by a lot of French language. This inspired me to write the song this way. One of our good friends Laura kadédoudi is speaking French on the song and I’ve also embedded a voice memo I recorded at a Cafe in Paris, to try and add to the overall feeling."
