Holly Lapsley Fletcher hails from Southport, Merseyside in the UK. There’s not too much going on in Southport on a Friday night so for her 19th birthday this year she decided to release a song instead. ‘Burn’ is the first part of her double A-side single release ‘Hurt Me/Burn’ which is set for release soon.
She’s now signed to XL Recordings, but has remained true to her ethereal minimal sound, which is informed by a classical background in cello, oboe, piano and guitar. The dreamy piano on ‘Burn’ is held together by the threads of her grainy voice, and a soft thudding drum comes in slowly. LÅPSLEY has long spoken about her admiration for James Blake, and the structure of ‘Burn’ is almost like an arrangement in homage to his style.
‘Burn’ is a song about love and fear, and the reticence to leap into something: ‘you may be the one that I’ve chosen / but it’s gonna burn if we get closer’. The song starts faint and sweet, but moves towards a smoldering, shaking ending as Låpsley is left ‘thinking about the long time / thinking bout the future’.
