Reminiscent of Mac Demarco, Hot Flash Heat Wave, show that their not just about surf rock but also delve into hazy pop on 'Glo Ride'.
If it were possible for a band to embody the sounds of sun, ocean and salty hair, San Fran locals HOT FLASH HEAT WAVE would be the band of choice. They've grown out of the cracks in a footpath slowly dominated by club and electronic music, surfacing with a surf rock temperament and, in some cases, a hazy pop.
Originally high school friends but reuniting as a band in the big city, the four-man band's chemistry is evident, releasing versatile, well-produced and catchy tracks. Perhaps this versatility stems from the fact that there are three lead singers, each doing their part on different songs, or perhaps it’s their ability to switch between rock, pop and even garage. Whatever the sound, these differences contribute to the artists’ ability to sound like a different band on every track though with an obvious connecting similarity.
One of their slowest releases to date but in no means of a lower standard, ‘Glo Ride’ sees the boys introduce a softer, less guitar-focused sound, opting to instead add some heavy bass. It focuses on the hook, which is reminiscent of Mac Demarco, and applies luscious harmonies placed over bright keys. The 30-second intro combines soft cooing and melodic guitar and is a wavy, slightly psychedelic start to the song. It acts like a lasso, pulling the listener in, however, when the vocals starts that’s what keeps them there.

With an extensive background in music having organised a variety of DIY gigs around their hometown during their teenage years, the band currently live under the same roof, no doubt adding to their musical chemistry. Currently the band is on a US tour, with a number of sold out shows.
