Live Review: Queen of bass Godlands goes hard on new track, 'Everybody Knows'

Godlands Review

Adelaide’s Annabel Hartlett, aka GODLANDS, goes hard on her new track, ‘Everybody Knows’. It's a song devoted to the spirit of trap and bass, in keeping with her previous two singles, 'Finally' and its follow-up, 'Hit Em Like This' both released last year.

Godlands has already had a fantastic start to the year, kicking off with a coveted spot supporting BAAUER on the Sydney leg of his international tour. Known for her rumbling bass concoctions and hard-hitting drums, she's quickly becoming one of Australia's most exciting and forward-thinking bass producers, and, ever an innovator, she's looking to incorporate more hip hop and rap into her productions, as that's where much of her inspiration comes from. "I’m keen to do a lot more rap tracks, since hip hop music is basically where all this stems from and I love it," she said, speaking to Purple Sneakers in an interview late last year.

On 'Everybody Knows,' she opens ominously with some spare drums and gelatinous snares. Other dark sound effects ramp up the tension, leading up to the first drop, swinging infectiously over a heavy bassline. Godlands uses vocal samples to great effect here, contrasting a deep-set vocal with a high-pitched, squeakier one throughout. 'Everybody Knows' is a patchwork of influences but Godlands makes it all work so well, melding disparate sounds and melodies perfectly.

It's going to be a massive year for Godlands, who is booked to perform at Party in the Paddock in February. She'll also be at Touch Bass in March alongside legends such as EXCISIONSLUMBERJACK and GETTER (among others). More info on that here. We can't wait to see what this absolute force of a producer gets up to next.
