Melbourne pair GL, self-proclaimed ‘purveyors of synth funk’, have just dropped their sparkly new single ‘Number One’. Get your throwback disco shoulders pad at the ready for this danceable retro cut.
Enchanting vocals murmur the track’s title lyrics at us before diving into Madonna-esque grooves, with clashing synths that accentuate the syllables on the catchy bridge ‘stop / me’.
If you came across their EP Love Hexagon from last year you’re surely already a supporter of the duo, but if not (and if you’re a fan of the dark-pop of Flight Facilities and Broods) then ‘Number One’ serves as a funky announcer for GL’s debut album due early next year.
GL, aka vocalist Ella Thompson and producer Graeme Pogson, have been dedicating a lot of time to their live schedule, supporting Chet Faker on his nationwide tour earlier in the year and throwing up a stand-out performance at Splendour In The Grass, where Thompson joined Mark Ronson onstage as part of his live supergroup. They also just played Sydney’s beat-focused OutsideIn Festival and are looking ahead to Meredith Music Festival over Christmas.
