Live Review: Frances ‘I Care’ ft. Pomo

Young UK songstress and pianist FRANCES has just shared the first single from the new collection, a neo-jazz collaboration with Canadian producer Pomo.

Young UK songstress and pianist FRANCES has just released her sophomore EP, and shared the first single from the new collection, a neo-jazz collaboration with Canadian producer Pomo, ‘I Care’.

Her grainy female vocals are vulnerable and sweet, telling us that ‘coming from a small town, everything is big to me’. POMO’s influence on the track is heard in the gentle but well placed soft synth pads – it’s a departure from his more house-centric grooves on his work with fellow Canadian Kaytranada earlier this year, but the organic and stripped back approach works really well with Frances’ gentle piano touch and vocals.

Pomo is also classically trained in piano, which presumably made the collaboration with the English pianist even more fruitful. The track develops into something quite different from its Imogen Heap-esque openings, cleverly accumulating its separate strands into a funky jazz break down that’s fun and thoughtful. There’s brass and horns, but not those oversaturated cheap horns that you hear on every single Majestic Casual track ever, these are actual horns done nicely and lightly, where less is more and you hear them how they should be heard, not blasted over a reggae-ton beat.

The rest of Frances’ sophomore EP, Let It Out, came out on Friday, via Communion Records so you can now enjoy four tracks featuring her warm and inviting vocals.
