If you're a Sydneysider you're probably already familiar with NON CHALANT. Along with being a classically trained muso, she's one of the founders of the genre free club night SWYTCH. But when she's not channeling high energy club music behind the decks, she's crafting idiosyncratic ambient tracks as FLOWER BOY 卓颖贤.
Both MARCUS WHALE and HTML FLOWERS have nabbed her for support slots, resonating with her forward thinking approach and delicate, yet dark sound. Her first official debut 'i just want 2 adore u', released on Sydney label Perfect Hair Records, is a thoughtful experiment as she explores her own feelings over a deep, swirling soundscape.
Distant percussion grounds echoing samples, bells and hypnotic pads. They meld together, reversed and reverbed, creating an intangible atmosphere that perfectly articulates the longing of the lyrics. Every element of this track is imposing in its depth and sensuous in its delivery. Glitchy bleeps, vocal chops and that haunting refrain "If I asked nicely would you be mine/I think about you all the time" feel raw and intense.
Taking inspiration from the casual vulnerability of LANA DEL REY, on this track Flower Boy 卓颖贤 wanted to explore her feelings more freely, saying the song was a step in “learning to admit to my emotions and be open about them”. Across the lyrics and the production this love song's unusual dark tone expresses the intensity of her feelings, the pain of having to hold them back and the weight of leaving it up to the other person to act.
Flower Boy 卓颖贤 has perfectly distilled her own complicated feelings in their rawest form over her melancholy ambient electronica. 'i just want 2 adore u' explores the intensity of falling for someone, across glitchy soundscapes and grand composition.
