Elohim is a name for God that’s used frequently in the Hebrew Bible. Xanax is the go to drug for anxiety and sleep disorders. And every press shot of LA-based artist ELOHIM refuses to reveal her face, hidden behind long dark locks or a mask. I think someone’s trying to be provocative.
‘Xanax’ is the follow up single to ‘She Talks Too Much’, a playful dig at that girl who just won’t shut up and kills your buzz. Now with the release of ‘Xanax’ we have the double A-side single.
This second track is slow and sluggish, like your head is spinning and eyes are drooping – Xanax by name, Xanax by nature. Her debut single ‘She Talks Too Much’ dropped eight weeks ago, and was a lot poppier and more carefree. You could bookend the party between that debut opener and ‘Xanax’ as the wind-down ending track, like one another’s yin and yang.
Here, as she sings "every day of my day of my day of my life", you’re sucked into the warpy whispers of this instantly maddening hook. Elohim does seem somewhat maddened, singing "I don’t wanna be dependent on some synthetic medicine", stringing together half rhymes and drug-fuelled imagery.
The pair of tracks are out now via B3SCI, both digitally and on limited edition 12” black vinyl complete with instrumental and a’capella versions of the tracks.
