Sydney producer CROOKED LETTER has dropped his debut single this week, and it's pretty damn funky. 'Heretics' are not usually our thing, but this track definitely gives them a better name. Whilst this is Crooked Letter's first single as a solo, it's definitely not his first time producing, having worked on tracks for talented vocalists such as WALLACE. It looks like we're not the only ones vibing on Crooked Letter's unique and rhythmic sound either, having already received airplay on Triple J within a week of releasing your first single is a pretty massive feat.
'Heretics' opens with distorted, old school radio sounding vocal loops and some funky licks of guitar. The thing that really sets this track about is the incredible off-beat percussion. Teamed with Crooked Letter's smooth as molasses flow, and gentle whirring electronica, the song takes on a real gentle jungle meets dancehall vibe. 'Heretics' definitely breaks down the barriers of genre, there's a real contemporary, almost KANYE WEST vibe about the stylised vocal looping and distortion that Crooked Letter layers towards the end of the tune too. Whilst 'Heretics' is gentle and easy to digest, it's layered and displays an immense maturity for a new solo artist.
Crooked Letter is definitely firmly on our radar now, and we're keen to see how this project evolves.
