Live Review: Cassius Select ‘Crook’

Sydney-based producer Cassius Select (aka Lavern Lee off of Guerre and Black Vanilla), has crafted together a menacing new mix, ‘Crooks’.

Sydney-based producer CASSIUS SELECT (aka Lavern Lee off of Guerre and Black Vanilla), has crafted together a menacing new mix, ‘Crooks’. His track of the same name sets the sound for the EP, which shows off fragmented beats and snippets of vocals cut together over a shuffling UK bassline.

The track quickly drops into a lo-fi thudded beat as an anonymous male voice mumbles ‘look at me’ over a rhythm-defying arrangement. It seems quite confusing and disjointed on first listen, but this is precision production. At the last section of the song things take a turn for the eerie, as the melody drops into the minor.

Cassius Select was recently signed to UK label Unknown to the Unknown off the back of the Crook EP, which is out now. Listen out for more chopped up syncopations and stuttered strutty beats coming soon.
