BILLIE BLACK appeared last year as a freshly 19 year old singer, being likened to Leona Lewis or other leading R&B ladies, and delivering a killer 4 track EP, 000 100. Now, she returns, with a slightly different sound and a whole lot of gusto, ready to encapsulate listeners once again.
Titled 'Going Under', the track catches you by surprise. It starts out soft and slow, much like what you'd expect to hear based on her previous releases. However, as the track picks up speed, it begins to shift. A glitch here or a bass drop there, you can feel it moving towards something. Suddenly, everything subsides, with the vocals stuck on repeat for a few seconds, before launching into a whole other level as an upbeat, house track.
The bouncing, funky electronica is a stark difference from her previous tracks, but a welcome addition to the once strictly sultry songstress. Whilst her EP did feature future electronica, it has never been as fun or upbeat as this.
'Going Under' comes ahead of not only her EP, Teach Me (dropping May 25), but also ahead of her embarking on a tour supporting Jack Garrett. Black said of her new track, "Going Under is my first real upbeat track. I wanted to put it up before I started my tour so people knew they could come along and dance." We can only hazard a guess, but if she keeps making songs like this, people won't be needing much persuasion at all to go along to a Billie Black show!
