BIG BOSS, aka Rafael Chavez, has dropped his third EP, Desu EP, via Vicious Bitch. For anyone who loves a bit of a bender, the genre bending, future trap scenario going on here will make you very happy.
Big Boss has produced three very different tracks that still have a few things in common. First things first Desu EP oozes Japanese-kitsch, with the tracks featuring some cute female Japanese vocals to love. Don’t delude yourself and think of Hello Kitty though, we are still dealing with trap and electronica, two genres not often associated with ‘cute’ per se. The second thing in common is the powerfully built up use of synth in each track and the ability to drop in and out of different genres without sounding confused.
Big Boss himself describes the EP as a bottling up of “all sorts of feels”. This is evident when you compare say, Hajimimashite (which means nice to meet you) to Tsundere (a word used to describe someone as progressing from hostile to friendly over time).
'Hajimimashite' has an almost childhood like feel with the opening of the track sounding kind of like electronica’s version of a music box. In childhood everyone is pleased to meet you, but as you grow older and hostility shows, perhaps the more whimsical feel created by the piano drive in 'Tsundere' is how you feel about the world. The EP’s namesake, 'Desu', rounds everything out with an energy filled groove you can let go of all inhibitions to.
