Becoming Phil is a unique find, with a special brand of 80s electro funk that is perfect for lounging, grooving and getting down.
BECOMING PHIL is a niche find, he’s one of Namibia's only electro/funk producers in the game right now, but even if he had overwhelming competition – he’d dominate it. His sound is crisp drums, eerie synths, and range-cutting basslines, topped off with subtle piano strokes – all the hallmarks of an experienced producer.
Releasing his full-length album, Electrum – Becoming Phil works with vocalists CHRISTIAN POLLONI and SHISHANI who add their equally skilled voices to the mix, turning out some easy listening 80’s funk that’ll have you grooving. An absolute highlight of the album is ‘Love Is Not Hard To Get’, even with its straight-up message, it is a seriously funky tune. Christian Polloni’s vocals are smooth, sexy and perfectly laid over pure electro funk. The track is not overly complicated, it utilises simple funk elements to produce something much greater. It’s the sort of track to muse over with a couple of friends after a long day, good enough to provide ambience but not ostentatious enough to take over a room.
Becoming Phil is not at all new to the scene, he just chooses to stay off the mainstream radar, staying in Windhoek, Namibia so that he can constantly refine his craft. He started producing in 1997 and since then has constantly been striving to stay on the forefront of electro funk. Becoming Phil’s full length Electrum release is available to listen to on Soundcloud and is well worth the listen.
