'It’s Hard To Push Back The Fear': Jay Watson Steps Into The Light As GUM

Album Review: Larry Gus - Years Not Living

It feels like losing control at a wild party, but when the beats kick you know you’re having fun.

In looking for new and unusual sounds that will make us dance the DFA give us Larry Gus' debut album. Years Not Living delivers a messy, kaleidoscopic explosion of '60s psychedelic pop samples layered over solid live beats. The whimsical lo-fi experimentation in which Gus indulges allows him to mischievously pursue whacked out jazz improvisations and kosmische tangents while disorientating listeners with a swatch of samples that create discordant and disorientating background noise. It feels like losing control at a wild party, but when the beats kick you know you're having fun.
