"There’s something here for fans of the genre, but nothin’ beyond it."

One hundred per cent Viking metal – that about sums up King Of Asgard and their latest record.

While you can’t diss a band for knowing what they like, the allegiance to the genre occasionally hinders rather than helps. That said, the album still delivers the Swedish metal goods, The Runes Of Hel and The Trickster display riffs that go beyond savagery yet retaining a strong sense of melody, while the atmospheric Omna demonstrates the band’s ability to carve their own path when they want. There’s something here for fans of the genre, but nothin’ beyond it.
