K. FlayElectro-indie darling Lupa J confidently delivered her glitchy, gadgety pop tracks to ease us into the evening. Her set reminded us of a DIY version of FKA Twigs as she live looped her vocals and flayed her arms and legs to the beat. New track Put Me Back Together closed her set in style.
K Flay, aka Kristine Flaherty, served up hip hop beats with a rockstar attitude. This Crush Me tour is the first time she's performed in Sydney, however, if the crowd's enthusiasm was anything to go by, she should have come sooner.
She launched into tunes Giver and Dreamers, as hip shaking, arm waving and singalongs ensued.
Flaherty's set crossed both albums, and showed that she's mastered the balance between scathing lyrics, hard-hitting beats and rock breakdowns. Her husky yet sultry vocals made everything sound so seething, while the potency and intelligence of her fired-off rhymes and lyrics shouldn't be understated.
Black Wave gave a nod to the current state of her US homeland, while Wishing It Was You harped back to times that saw K Flay drinking Jim Beam in her parent's basement — with someone revealing their desire to do the same with her in their own basement.
FML was a moment of triumph, happiness and release, while High Enough was definitely the height of the set. The vivid rage in Blood In The Cut was felt throughout every inch of the venue and left the audience strangely in awe as she exited.
An encore was called for and she returned with The President Has A Sex Tape and Make Me Fade, ending the set with a similar sentiment to a mic drop. Safe to say K Flay crushed it.
