Joel CreaseyStarting his show with clips of TV appearances and tabloid-like headlines, Joel Creasey is certainly not shy of the limelight. He appeared on stage with a flourish and a curtsy to an almost full Sunday night Enmore Theatre crowd.
We were reminded early on that if you are looking for a show with meaning or sad but funny tales of life and politics, then this probably isn’t the show for you. We were told that inside those four walls was a safe space, but everyone else was fair game.
What followed was a show that did not hold back. Creasey pulled back the curtain on his life, personal and professional, and delivered with razor-sharp wit and wicked tongue. Did we mention it was fast? Oh boy, keep up – this show was FAST. You really have to have your own wits about you to follow the stories and small nuances that Creasey includes in his storytelling.
Despite the glitz and glamour of a life that has travelled from being a “Nova Casanova” on the streets of Perth to an internationally recognised entertainer (and ahem, an Order Of Merlin, First Class, bestowed by JK Rowling herself), we got a glimpse at the comedian’s personal life with stories of home, including his psychic boyfriend, his ballsy mother and his friends.
It feels like there are few secrets with Creasey. Sharing experiences of his “active death threat”, encounters with Kylie and the extraordinary story of when he met Meghan Markle, we all become part of his clan, understanding Creasey and where he is coming from.
The show’s length (almost 90 minutes) saw the energy wane just a little near the end, but a beautifully entertaining story of his nan’s wake and subsequent Perth homecoming rounded out the show perfectly as we all felt like we were Creasey’s best friend.
The show was a joy and just hours after we bid bon voyage to Creasey, he jumped on a plane to Tel Aviv for Eurovision. Told you he was fast!
